Dr. Kathryn Edwards

“Of all the things you call me I am most appreciative and most honored to be called a pediatrician because the children are our future”

Dr. Edwards, on her career, 2026 – Virology Unmasked

Dr. Kathryn Edwards has spent her career fighting for the health of children. On Dr. Edwards’ last day of residency in 1976, she saw a child die of Hib, Haemophilus influenzae type b, a serious bacterial infection which can kill children under five. While hospitals in 1976 saw around 1,000 Hib deaths a year, there are less than 5 deaths a year now because of the Hib vaccine. Dr. Edwards helped establish the Vaccine Evaluation Center at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She was then essential in the evaluation of the Hib vaccine in clinical trials for safety and efficacy. Her work went far beyond Hib. She, along with colleagues at Vanderbilt and at the NIH, also conducted studies on a wave of new, safer, pertussis vaccines. Her work on many vaccines has touched millions of lives. Dr. Edwards also campaigned for safe, effective vaccines for a whole host of diseases throughout her career. Her advocacy includes speaking to news papers, testifying in trials, presenting at conferences and to doctors, and serving on advisory boards to national and international health organization. While fighting for safe vaccines, she also managed to be an exceptional mentor and to raise four children. She is now retired but still ready at Vanderbilt to jump in and teach doctors about previously forgotten diseases, like Hib, which are returning as childhood vaccination wanes in the US.
